Winterize Your Home with Wood Staining

With only a couple of months left in the year, it’s a good time to winterize your home to protect against the elements the rainy months can bring. Whether it’s your backyard fence, garden box, or outdoor deck, evaluate what areas of your outdoor space need another coat of stain.

Maintaining your outdoor decor will preserve the integrity of the wood and keep it looking beautiful season after season. Here are a few tips to consider as you get started on your next home project.

Start with Clean Wood

Applying a stain instantly brightens the wood and gives it a warm and inviting finish. To prep, always start with clean boards, free of dirt and debris.

A power rinse is typically all that’s needed to wash away any lingering film on the boards. Although, leave time for the boards to completely dry before adding stain. Also, make sure to clear the surrounding area of your workspace to avoid immediate contact with the boards once stained.

Stick with Oil-Based Wood Stains

Oil-based stains penetrate the surface of the wood, protecting it from the inside out. Choose from premium wood stains like Penofin, Messmer’s, or PPG which protect against UV rays, mildew, and seasonal moisture, including snow, rain, and fog. When properly applied, they won’t peel or chip.

J&W Lumber always has pre-tinted stains in a variety of shades in stock. Whether you prefer a lighter, natural wood color or a modern gray hue, stop by your local store, and choose what best complements your home’s aesthetic.

In addition, certain brands have environmentally friendly wood stains or wood stains that deliver a matte finish, giving you even more options to choose from. If you’re not sure exactly where to get started, we have wood stain charts and sample projects in-store to show how different stains will look once applied to the wood.

Plus, our in-store representatives will be happy to send you home with wood stain samples and a scrap piece of wood to test at home before committing to a color.

Follow Manufacturers’ Recommendations

Though many products are similar, always follow the manufacturers’ installation instructions for how many coats to apply to get your ideal finish. Also, whenever you’re staining wood, keep safety in mind.

In general, it’s best to soak all rags, sponges, and any other application materials in a metal bucket of water for at least 24 hours before throwing them away. However, follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding safe disposal and the guidelines set by your local municipality.
