Which Trex Decking Colors Should I Consider?

As we have mentioned in previous articles, composite decking materials have come a long way. Gone are the days of plastic-looking planks, replaced by realistic synthetic materials that have been carefully designed and developed to perform as well as natural wood, without the requisite maintenance.

One of the finest examples of modern composite decking is Trex® brand, an industry leader in decking.

Trex decking has three core product groups and each is available in multiple color variations that create a finished deck that works well with houses of every style. You might be asking yourself, “Which Trex decking colors should I consider?”

Read on to learn more about the aesthetic advantages of each hue.

High-end Allure: Trex Transcend

Trex Transcend® is the highest price point of the Trex products, and for good reason. Its deep wood-grain pattern and rich colors mimic high-end hardwoods and sophisticated tropical woods. Part of the pricing is on account of the construction of the material itself – the Transcend line features the most durable outer shell of any Trex product. The shell is what is wrapped around the inner composite, giving it a look and feel that is closest to real wood. Within the Transcend line, there are two types of board options:

  • Trex Transcend – Solid colors that are available in a range of earth tones
  • Trex Transcend Tropical – Multiple color striations, with multi-hued streaking throughout whose color variations look like natural tropical wood

Trex Transcend decking planks are available in premium tropical colors: coppery Havana Gold, slate gray Island Mist, rich auburn Lava Rock, classically rich Spiced Rum and a milk chocolate-y Tiki Torch. The classic earth tones series of Trex Enhance features redwood-inspired Firepit, silvery Gravel Path, pine-reminiscent Rope Swing, maple brown Tree House, and dark gray-brown Vintage Lantern.

Mid-range Elegance: Trex Enhance

Trex Enhance® is the middle price point of Trex composite decking. Trex decking colors in the Select line are diverse and fit well with a wide range of designs. Trex Enhance features two lines of colors, Enhance Basics and Enhance Naturals. The Basics line includes light brown Beach Dune, clear toned gray Clam Shell and coffee-colored Saddle. Enhance Naturals feature more striation and color variations, including gray-brown Coastal Bluff, dappled silver and gray Foggy Wharf, a deeper gray Rocky Harbor, a redwood-like Sunset Cove, and golden Toasted Sand.

Economical Charm: Trex Select

The Select® series is Trex’s most affordable line of composites. Available in Autumn 2019, we love Trex Select because it’s a flexible option that delivers a natural color-streaked look without breaking the bank. Trex Select is available in five classic and contemporary hues: richly red Madeira, cool Pebble Gray, mid-tone brown Saddle, deep gray-brown Winchester, and dark chocolate Woodland Brown. Trex Select looks excellent when offset against white facing and railings.

Mix and match Trex decking colors like a pro

In addition to its durability and minimal maintenance, one of the best features of any of the Trex decking lines is that the color families have been developed to work well together. Due to its composite nature, all planks are uniform in color, so you don’t need to worry about variations in different areas of your deck. Of course, its fade-resistant design – and accompanying warranty – also ensure that sun-drenched areas of your deck aren’t going to change colors over time.

One of the most common color combos we see is the use of light gray for main deck planks (lighter colors are a good idea so as not to scorch bare feet or animal paws) with brown or red planks as an accent perimeter. Another great choice is to mix and match any of the colors in the brown family, which all work beautifully together.

Remember: never paint your Trex decking. Doing so will likely void your warranty. However, with such a wide range of attractive and natural-looking colors, you have plenty of options to choose from.

If you’re thinking of composite decking, Trex has a huge variety of colors to enhance any outdoor space. With this assortment available, there’s sure to be a color, grain pattern and style that matches exactly what you’re looking for.

We built a Trex deck 10+ years ago out of woodland brown. We need some pieces to fix a rail: 4×4 sleeve, caps and railing pieces. Where can we find it in that color? Thanks!

We have a taupe or clay color house and are thinking of doing our deck in Select Madeira. What other color goes with Madeira that I can use as an accent color for the picture frame? Thanks

Can you mix enhance and transcend products on the same job?

Hi Karen:
Trex does not recommend you mix Transcend and Enhance on the same job because Transcend boards are technically slightly thicker than the Enhance boards.

Our cottage is Monterey taupe in colour hardy board and we are thinking of doing the main deck in Trecce toasted sand with a border in beach dune. Has anyone done this combination and what does it look like or should it be the other way around with the lighter colour as the main deck and the toasted sand as the perimeter question.

I am using a harvard slate siding by royal and wondered what color decking color would go well. I was looking at clamshell but not completely sold.
