Composite decking is known for its durability, natural look, and beautiful color. While it may seem that composite lumber is totally indestructible, it still requires proper care to ensure that it stays in great shape. Here are four helpful tips for taking care of your composite decking:
- Sweep regularly. Although you won’t need to give your deck a thorough cleaning very often, sweeping it with a stiff brush once a week will help reduce the buildup of dirt and grime. Regular sweeping will also help to keep your deck cleaner for longer, so you can go a few extra weeks without using sprays or soaps.
- Clean carefully. There are a number of different ways to clean your composite decking. If you have a pressure washer, you can use it to flush out dirt buildup. Be sure to set your pressure washer to no more than 1200 PSI to avoid damaging the lumber. For more stubborn stains, use an oxygen bleach-and-water solution, and scrub with a stiff broom. Rinse after letting the solution sit on your deck for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Ensure adequate drainage. Although your composite deck is treated to prevent mold and mildew growth, the wood fibers in the lumber may still be susceptible to mold growth. Make sure that your deck drains properly, and remove damp leaves or tarps that may encourage moisture buildup.
- Remove oils and greases promptly. If you grill or sunbathe on your composite decking, remember to clean up oil and lotion spills promptly—allowing them to sit can cause staining in the lumber.
