Everything You Need to Know About Redwood Lumber

Redwood lumber may be the best kept secret around. Whether you’re looking at redwood decking or a patio cover, you will enjoy all that this affordable and beautiful wood has to offer. Read on for a closer look at what you need to know about redwood lumber and how it can benefit you.

Resistant

All lumber acts somewhat like a sponge, absorbing and releasing moisture as its surrounding environment changes. Redwood has unique properties that help it remain stable through this moisture transfer process, making redwood less likely to expand, cup, check, warp, and split than other types of wood; which is one reason why redwood is ideal for outdoor home and landscaping projects. The heart grades of redwood are also resistant to mold, mildew, and insects. This makes redwood a great choice for decks, outdoor furniture, fencing, garden boxes, patio covers, patios, and more.

Workability

Redwood lumber mostly comes from the Pacific Northwest and is very dense, but it’s also lightweight and workable. For example, no special tools are required to build a great deck or fence. Redwood is also unique in that it has little or no messy pitch or resins. Redwood is a fun wood.

Environmentally Friendly

Redwood lumber is renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable, making it environmentally friendly. So not only can you appreciate its stunningly beautiful deep red and yellow hues, but you can also feel good using such an eco-friendly product.

Options

Depending on your particular project, you’ll have 30 different grades of redwood lumber to choose from and can order redwood lumber in a variety of sizes and dimensions.

Is Redwood porus? I have a beautiful slab I am making an electric guitar with, and need to know if pore filling is required for a beautiful finish.

Good Afternoon Mike!

Redwood is not the most porus wood out there but, in terms of instrument making, it is a little soft. I went ahead and forwarded this question to the guys out back and they felt like, while your new guitar might be beautiful, it could suffer in the long run due to how susceptible redwood is to scuffing and scratching.

Hope that helps!

I am making a cricket bat out of redwood. They are traditionally made from English willow but it is not readily available in the US. How does redwood compare to willow?

Hi Duane- Redwoods are naturally resistant to insects, fungi, and fire because they are high in tannin and do not produce resin or pitch. From time-to-time however, some minor pitch bleeding becomes evident when redwood is exposed to high temperatures, such as when it is used for siding, trim or fascia on a south- or west-facing wall. Hope that answers your question!! In short.. no! 🙂 HAPPY BUILDING!
